That was the choice of Cindy and Steve, the winning bidders for a wine tasting I had donated to a silent auction at the Answer The Call charity gala to benefit the families of New York police and firefighters who die in the line of duty and, with the help of some generous importers, this is what I gave them.

Italian wines have improved out of all recognition in the last generation, and it's not just Piedmont and Tuscany making the running, either. I poured six wines and only one of them was from these storied regions, the rest were grown in areas as different as Friuli in the north-east hard against the Slovenian border and sun baked Sicily in the south, neither exactly famous for quality wine in the past. But today, what lovely wines!
