Cutaia’s Meat Market has been a neighborhood institution in Rochester’s 19th Ward for decades. The place opened at 574 Chili Ave., near Thurston Road, in 1974 and has been a mainstay on the city's southwest side since. It’s been a year since the death of the founder, Charles Cutaia — but one of his sons, Joe, is carrying on the family tradition.
Charles had been retired for about five years when he died at age 73 in June 2016. He certainly wasn’t forgotten, Joe Cutaia said. “The way the community came together showed the love,” he said. “My dad was the kindest man in the world. If you needed a loaf of bread to feed your family, he would give it to you …. We’re more than a grocery store. The community, we’re part of it. We know everybody around here.”
