Taste of Italy comes to Marblehead, Sept. 28

On a crisp autumn morning, the dew drips from bunches of grapes on the hillside vineyards in Chianti Classico. It is here where some of the world's best wine begins, and where Lia Banville, founder and president of Banville & Jones Wine Merchants, spends time when she is not at her import office in New York City or her home in the Canadian province Manitoba, where she lives with her family. Banville visits Tuscany's Chianti Classico region at least three times a year to take her shift in running the family vineyard her father, Pier Luigi Tolaini, bought in 1999.


"As a kid, we had wine on the table," says Banville, who recalls her only option was "wine or water — no milk or Coca Cola."
Her father grew up in Tuscany but came to North America at 19 years old and became successful in the transportation business. His financial success allowed him to explore and taste some of the world's finest wines, many in Burgundy and California. Forty years after leaving the rustic terroir of Tuscany, he wanted to return, but this time to make good wine for a change.
