Pizzeria Sophia, located west of Florida’s Turnpike on the corner of 441 and Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, is among a crop of casual Italian eateries that opened their doors in the past year. This is a non-kosher restaurant that offers vegetarian selections. There is plenty of outdoor patio dining, but the restaurant’s centerpiece and namesake can be found inside on the wall above the pizza-making station. It’s a picture of Italian film legend Sophia Loren preparing a pizza herself.
Sophia had a starring role in the 1954 film L’oro di Napoli (The Gold of Naples), portraying a pizza maker who loses her wedding ring. Owner Frank Crupi said, “He has always been a big fan of Sophia’s, so naming his restaurant after her is his way of honoring her.”
