A Gem Worth Seeing: Rome's Borghese Gallery

You can't leave Rome without visiting one of its most incredible art galleries: Galleria Borghese. Located in the northeast corner of the beautiful Villa Borghese park, its collections are housed in a magnificent 17th-century villa, built as a villa suburbana, or 'party villa', and include antiquities, Renaissance and the beginnings of Baroque art – in just 20 rooms.

The original collection of paintings, sculptures and antiquities was begun by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a member of the Borghese family and the nephew of Pope Paul V. Cardinal Scipione was drawn to any works of ancient, Renaissance and contemporary art which might re-evoke a new golden age. He was not particularly interested in medieval art, but passionately sought to acquire antique sculpture.
