At the last Academy Awards, the Italian director and screenwriter Paolo Sorrentino walked away with the Oscar for best foreign-language film, for "The Great Beauty," a scathing portrait of greed and bad taste in Berlusconi-era Rome.

This year his friend Paolo Virzi is competing for Italy with "Human Capital," a scathing portrait of greed and indifference to culture in Berlusconi-era Milan.
