The victory of the US Open by Italian tennis player Flavia Pennetta has been on everyone's lips since Saturday 12th September, when she met her rival and compatriot, Roberta Vinci, making history as it was the first time an Italian woman reached the singles final of the US open and that two Italian women met in the final. If Pennetta previously beat the World Number 2 (Simona Halep), Vinci won against the number 1 and super favorite, Serena Williams, beyond any expectations in one of the most compelling matches ever.
But this is not the first and only time Italian sporting personalities or teams have proved their worth against all the odds. In what may seem like the ultimate incentive for Italians (in sport or otherwise) to come out fighting against all odds, Swide has selected 5 instances when Italians (unexpectedly) achieved gold.
