The Università per Stranieri di Perugia is pleased to announce that a two-week-long AP Italian Language and Culture Institute will be held from July 14 to July 26, 2014, in Perugia, Italy.

The AP Italian Language and Culture Summer Institute will focus on la vita quotidiana, across the six guiding themes (Global Challenges; Science and Technology; Contemporary Life; Personal and Private Identities; Families and Communities; Beauty and Aesthetics) of AP world languages, and content-based language acquisition as the basis for producing a four-year sequenced study of Italian.

Participants will take away from the institute course outlines for levels 1 through AP; sample syllabi; multiple resources; a compendium of techniques and best practices; unit and lesson plans; formative and summative assessment ideas; and other immediately applicable classroom materials.

Participants: high school, middle school, student teachers of Italian; undergraduate Italian majors, graduate students in Italian. This institute is designed to prepare teachers not just for AP courses, but for the sequence of courses that leads up to the AP level. The focus and venue of the institute allow for aggiornamento of language skills as well.

Guest speakers: experts from Italian and American high schools and universities, and from the Università per Stranieri di Perugia.

Lead Instructor: Beth Bartolini-Salimbeni, a representative to the original task force that developed the AP Italian Language and Culture program, a former Fulbright Scholar and twice an NEH fellow, a Question Leader at the AP Italian Reading, and author of various articles and books, including most recently Italian Grammar for Dummies.

Activities on which to base teaching units: Visits to Perugia's museums and monuments; Assisi; Bevagna and Montefalco.

CEUs: 3 continuing education credits. This is a College Board endorsed AP Summer Institute.

Graduate credit: 3 credits toward the MA program, Didattica dell'italiano lingua non materna at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia. For more detailed information, contact: Roberto Dolci ([email protected])
