Aviano and the Italian cities of American bases are on alert

The US military base in Aviano is crucial to the local economy. Hosting over 6,000 American soldiers and 759 Italian civilian employees, the base is the second-largest employer in Friuli Venezia Giulia. However, the Trump-Musk initiative to scale down the US military presence in Europe is causing widespread uncertainty. Workers fear the economic impact, as Aviano generates €500 million annually, with over €1 billion across Italy.

Recent White House decisions include a 20% funding cut for USAF bases in Europe, pressure on the EU to increase its military spending, and stricter oversight of base employees. Workers have been ordered to submit detailed weekly reports, causing confusion and tension. Additionally, company credit card use has been suspended for 30 days, hiring freezes imposed, and temporary contracts as well as retiree replacements halted.

The base's command structure is also changing: General Tad Clark, current commander of the 31st Fighter Wing, will be replaced by a colonel, indicating a possible downgrade of Aviano’s status. The base houses 52 nuclear warheads and multiple combat aircraft, making it strategically significant.

Italian labor unions are concerned about job security and safety, considering protests and demanding clarification from the government. Aviano’s mayor, Paolo Tassan Zanin, is monitoring the situation closely and warns that if no answers are provided, he will push for a formal Italy-US negotiation. Even American soldiers stationed at Aviano are confused and uncertain about the future of the base. The situation remains volatile and evolving.
