At the Milan Fencing World Championships Italy continues to win gold medals: this time it is two teams, one men's and one women's, that give great joy to the Italians, not least because in both cases the Italian team defeated their French "cousins," with whom there is always a great rivalry.
Women's foil is increasingly Italian. For the 18th time in history the world gold medal goes to Italy. Just as it did a year ago in Cairo. After an all-Italian podium in the individual competition comes the team gold against France. Alice Volpi (reigning world champion), Arianna Errigo (silver in the individual), Martina Favaretto (world bronze) and Francesca Palumbo beat France 45-39.
After the women foil fencers, here are the Italians in epee who dominated the heavily favored French with a resounding 45-31, bringing home a historic gold. Davide Di Veroli, Federico Vismara, Gabriele Cimini and Andrea Santarelli are the four newly crowned World Champions. A final without history, with the Italians dominating from the start. In team epee we had not won a World Championship since 1993 in Essen, while last year in Cairo we had lost the final always to France, which in the last 16 editions of the World Championships had won gold 11 times. An Italian triumph came after 30 very long years.
