A new 800-page report, Tourism in Italy, reveals a nation beloved around the world with an enviable and varied tourism industry, but also one with persistent problems that limit its opportunities for development. The twentieth edition of the report, by the Italian National Research Council and the research institute for innovation and development in services, looked in particular at trends that emerged in the decade 2004 to 2014.
In 2014, tourism, generated €94.8 bn, down 11% from 2011 and Italy lost additional ground in the global market, with its share falling to 4.3%, from 4.4% the year before. In 2000, it was 6.1%.
