Former Boston Celtics forward Luigi Datome to retire as a player after FIBA World Cup 2023

It’s a pretty common trope for players to make the leap into coaching after their playing career ends, but for former Boston Celtics forward Luigi Datome, that isn’t in the cards. Having announced his retirement after playing for the Italian National Team in FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Datome recently told Basketnews that he doesn’t think he’s a good fit for the job.

“I don’t see me in that role,” he told Basketnews. “I’ve had the privilege of working with many great coaches, and I know it requires tremendous mental strength. I think I’m more open to understanding the error than to underline it.” “Besides, I’m a quiet guy, and my coaching style might not align with those of coaches I had,” added Datome.
