An important meeting was held in recent days at the Ellis Island Museum of Immigration as NY between the symbols of Italian-American emigration: the MU.MA and the MEI, with the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation.

This is a further step in the international collaboration between these prestigious institutions that will lead to the creation in late 2026 at the Ellis Island Museum of the exhibition “Between two Worlds,” which will enhance the significance of the history and impact of Italian emigration between the United States and Italy.

Through photographic galleries, the Italian men and women who emigrated to the United States - called LAmerica by Italian emigrants - between 1892 and World War II will be celebrated, so that it will be possible for visitors to Ellis Island to better understand why Italian emigration began, how it occurred and how it developed.

Pierangelo Campodonico, Director of Istituzione Mu.MA - Musei del Mare e delle Migrazioni, Paolo Masini President of the MEI Foundation and Cherie Butler Deputy Superintendent (TBC) representative of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum participated in the meeting to define in detail the points of the twinning.  Also present at the event were the Deputy Mayor of Genoa, Anna Dentoni Secretary General of the Association Promoting Museums of the Sea, Diana Pardue - Chief Museum Services Division and Judy M. Giuriceo - Curator of Exhibits & Media U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island New York.

The agreement, which will be formally signed in the coming months, provides for the implementation of several joint projects that will enrich the experience and training of the staff of both museums through the exchange of managerial, technical and professional knowledge, information, data and technology.  Also planned are: participation in conferences and symposia; mutual promotion on the twin facilities' websites; and the sharing and promotion of research, exhibitions and projects aimed at enhancing the histories of Italian emigration with the involvement of other Italian museums dedicated to migration that already collaborate with MEI.
