Italy assumed presidency of the G7 on January 1st and on the same day also became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, over which they will preside during the month of November. Yesterday, Italy also entered the "troika" of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), for which they will manage their Mediterranean contact group.
The Mediterranean is the foreign policy focus for Italy's new Prime Minister/former Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, who claims that the southern shores of the Mediterranean could be the prime source of threats to the Italian state, both in terms of national security and the economy.
