It can happen in Italy that a castle is named after the physical flaw that afflicted the man who built and inhabited it. Welcome to the castle of Gambatesa, one of the most beautiful and fascinating in Molise, in a border area between the region's mountain ranges and the Apulian Tavoliere plain.
It isn't an easily accessible area, crossed by a cattle track: this stone-paved path allowed the movement of herds from Northern Molise or Abruzzo to the Tavoliere plain. Each year, in the right seasons, it was traveled by shepherds working for prominent local families: they left in autumn, came back in the spring and the office in charge of monitoring the herds was the "Sheep drive custom house," based in Foggia.
