Some 1,500 migrants have been rescued and eight bodies recovered from the Mediterranean Sea in several operations coordinated by the Italian Coast Guard, the rescue agency said Tuesday.
The migrants were rescued as part of seven operations conducted in recent hours in the Strait of Sicily, between Italy and the African continent. According to a Coast Guard statement, 1,097 people had been rescued while efforts to shift migrants from three other boats were ongoing, which would raise the number of rescued to 1,500.
