Italian fruit and vegetables have become safer

Over the last ten years, the content of pesticides in Italian fruit and vegetables has decreased from 5.6% to 0.5%. The levels of pesticides were significantly lowered in 2011. However, celery, tomatoes and citrus fruit can sometimes contain pesticide residues more often than other fruit or vegetables.

The use of pesticides in the cultivation of fruit, vegetables, grapes and olives in Italy decreased tenfold within last ten years. Nevertheless, the amount of pesticide residue detection tests on Italian products was multiplied by ten. Moreover, compared to 2011, the percentage of pesticide detections in fruit and vegetables from the third world has been reduced, thanks to the enhanced control.
