The export of Italian gelato has reached an all-time high, with over 100 million kilos of gelato sold worldwide in 2024. This represents a significant milestone in the sector, as Italian gelato continues to conquer international markets. Gelato exports are experiencing steady growth, with more than 40% of Italian-made gelato now enjoyed abroad.
Italy is widely recognized for its high-quality gelato, with its craftsmanship and tradition being a symbol of excellence. The country's gelato has become synonymous with authenticity and luxury in many parts of the world. In terms of geographic distribution, the United States remains the leading market for Italian gelato, followed by other countries in Europe, such as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
However, new markets are emerging, particularly in Asia, where gelato's popularity is steadily increasing. The strong global demand for Italian gelato is attributed to its natural ingredients, unique flavors, and the widespread fascination with Italian culture, which is synonymous with good food and high-quality artisanal products.
In addition to traditional gelaterias, Italian gelato is now widely available in supermarkets and restaurants around the world. International chains and local stores are increasingly incorporating Italian-style gelato into their offerings, providing a taste of Italy to an even broader audience. This growth is also supported by innovations in the gelato industry, such as the introduction of vegan and gluten-free options, which appeal to a wider consumer base.
Italy’s gelato sector has experienced a revival, partly driven by the rise in consumer awareness about the benefits of authentic, high-quality food products. As more people seek out natural, artisanal products, Italian gelato stands out as a top choice. The sector has also benefited from Italy's strong tourism industry, as many visitors take home gelato-related souvenirs or purchase the product abroad.
In total, the Italian gelato industry has generated over 4 billion euros in revenue, contributing significantly to the Italian economy. The continued success of Italian gelato highlights the growing demand for premium, artisanal products and reflects Italy’s strong position in the global food market.
