Italian winemakers must feel like they are on the crest of a wave right now – or at least some of them – but it's no time to rest on their laurels. The wines of Italy have probably never been as popular globally as they have been over the past five years. Wine lovers, collectors and critics have showered plaudits, love and money upon the wines that emerge from Europe's boot.
However, there is a slight danger that all this oxygen of publicity is being sucked up by a few regions – in fact, a few wines – and a look at the list of the 10 most searched-for Italian wines will confirm that. Search data suggests that Italy's wines are still popular, but not quite as popular as they were a year ago.
