Jannik Sinner also triumphs in Rotterdam. He is the first Italian to be world No. 3

Number three today. Number two in the spring, number one in the fall. Few thought last February 2023 that Jannik Sinner could overtake Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in the rankings within twelve months. On Monday, February 20, 2023, Alcaraz was still number two in the world, with 6480 points, not too far behind Djokovic (at 7070), but Sinner was number twelve in the Atp rankings, at 2745 points. Between the two, then, a difference of 3735 points.

A year later, the distance will have been reduced to 835 points, with Alcaraz #2 at 9105 points and Sinner, new number three, at 8270, with the Italian having 5525 more ranking points than in 2023. With a hint of optimism (supportedby the realism of the numbers) one can imagine Sinner overtaking Alcaraz and thus capturing the world No. 2 position as early as spring, even in April, at the end of the Miami tournament.

The No. 1 question for Sinner is postponed for a few months, probably until the fall. Sinner in 2023 after the final reached in Miami and including the round of 16 at the Us Open, has 3100 points to defend (again with the scoring system relative to 2023) with the heavy bills of the Wimbledon semifinal and the victory in the Toronto 1000, but nothing compared to those of his rivals, with Alcaraz having to defend something like 6725 points and Djokovic (who is currently No. 1 with 9855, 1585 more than Sinner) instead 6785 points. We are talking for more than twice as many to defend for the top two players in the world than for Sinner. So, a few more months of patience and, in the hope that Jannik can continue in this way, it is not unthinkable to think of the first Italian king of the Atp ranking.
