The legendary Checkertails were a sight for sore eyes when they arrived in Lesina, Italy, in March 1944.
Residents of the small Italian town had suffered under brutal and inhumane treatment by the Nazis during World War II.
When members of the U.S. Air Force's 325th Fighter Group — the Checkertail Clan — swooped in they were greeted as liberators. To this day the townspeople of Lesina remain grateful for the Americans' role in liberating their town.
