Since the early part of the last decade, about 80 Italian companies have decided to reshore their production back to Italy from abroad, mainly from the Far East and Eastern Europe. Clothing, footwear and electronics are the main fields experiencing the phenomenon, but the trend is growing also in home furnishings and automotive, making Italy the world's second largest reshorer after the United States.
Beside economic reasons, like growing labor costs in hosting countries and the distance to the final markets, Italian manufacturers mention quality controls and the marketing advantages of "Made in Italy" tag as the reasons for returning home.
