Made in Italy: Italian chemistry grows and accounts for 4.4% of the global total

With a total turnover of €77 billion and a strong export orientation, the Italian chemical industry represents an excellence of Made in Italy. In recent years, despite global challenges, the sector has strengthened its position and achieved significant growth in exports. In 2023, 59% of the sector's revenue came from foreign sales, an increase of 24 percentage points compared to twenty years ago.
Between 2010 and 2023, exports of Italian chemicals grew by 85%, making it the second-largest exporter in Europe after Spain (+85%), surpassing Germany (+66%) and France (+53%). In 2024, in the first eleven months of the year, foreign sales reached €36.7 billion (+1.5% compared to the previous year). The sector has been particularly driven by fine and specialty chemicals, including cosmetics, paints, adhesives, detergents, and additives.
