The Sanremo Festival 2025 will kick off Tuesday February 11. The first edition of the Festival was in 1951, and since 1955 Rai has been broadcasting the event live. But yesterday Rai's lawyers have filed an appeal against the ruling of the Liguria Regional Administrative Court, which had ruled that the direct entrustment of the organization of the Italian Song Festival to Rai by the City of Sanremo was illegitimate.

Rai argued that “there is no Sanremo Festival without us, the brand is inseparable from the format,” in addition to other elements set out in the appeal. In December, the Regional Administrative Court of Liguria had ruled that the direct entrustment of the organization of the Festival to RAI by the City of Sanremo is illegitimate, and that from 2026 it will have to proceed with a tender open to all competitors of Italian public television.
