Historic double gold for Italy at the Armeec Arena in Sofia, Bulgaria, where Sofia Raffaeli became world champion in the hoop and ball specialties during the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. The 18-year-old from Chiaravalle (Marche, Italy), dubbed "Atomic Ant," triumphed in the hoop specialty with an explosive exercise, beating Bulgarian gymnast Stiliana Nikolova and German athlete Darja Varfolomeev.
But Raffaeli did not spare herself, and also won individual world gold in the ball specialty with a 34,900-point exercise, again surpassing German Varfolomeev (34,100) and fellow Italian, Milena Baldassarri (32,400). And Raffaeli's triumphs taste even sweeter. In fact, the athlete is the first Italian woman in history to individually reach the top step of the podium in specialty finals during the World Championships.
