Romance, as chance would have it, is an old tradition here. In the 1880s, Richard Wagner modelled the magical gardens in his opera Parsifal on the grounds of Villa Rufolo, a magnificent 13th-century building that was once home to the Rufolo family, and local legend has it that DH Lawrence penned some of the more salacious chapters of Lady Chatterley's Lover here.
It also has long been a magnet for the great and good of Hollywood — everyone from Humphrey Bogart to Leonardo DiCaprio has flocked here for a little summer R&R — which explains why this small, unassuming town boasts some of the most magnificent five-star hotels on the Amalfi Coast.
