Another milestone for Fiumicino's Leonardo da Vinci Airport: it is the best in Europe for the sixth time in the last seven years in the category of airports over 40 million passengers. This was decreed by the international trade association Aci (Airport council international) Europe, which rewards, each year, European airports that have achieved excellence in different sectors.
The evaluations were made by a jury of six leading institutional and technical figures from the European aviation sector. "Leonardo da Vinci," this year's winner ex-aequo with the Istanbul iGA International Airport, also won the "Digital transformation award," for its commitment to digitization and promotion of innovation in order to provide an airport experience for travelers of increasing quality.
Adding to the recognition was another milestone: on Sunday, June 23, the airport touched new historical records for the number of passengers passing through the airport in a single day: more than 173,000.
The jury of experts judged Rome Fiumicino airport, managed and developed by Aeroporti di Roma "digital, reliable, data-driven and sustainable." Fiumicino thus consolidates its supremacy in Europe, built by winning the "Best Airport Award" in the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Specifically, among the evaluation criteria were recognized Aeroporti di Roma's commitment to operations and customer experience; the development of new "green" infrastructure and the airport's 5-Star Skytrax commitment as a "Careport" in promoting an increasingly sustainable airport that takes care of people and the territory; on innovation as a driver for the development of the sector, including the design and planning of new transport modes.
Thanks in part to its investments in adopting the most innovative technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and environmental impact of its processes, Rome Fiumicino Airport also won the "Digital Transformation Award," surpassing the airports of Zurich (Switzerland) and Ljubljana (Slovenia) in the finals, thus repeating its 2021 success. This award, promoted by the Sesar Joint Undertaking, in collaboration with Aci Europe, saw Aeroporti di Roma's commitment to the implementation of digital transformation recognized, enhancing the presence of physical spaces such as the Innovation Hub in Terminal 1, the collaboration with stakeholders, the projects implemented and, within the company's Open Innovation model, the benefits brought to Fiumicino airport in terms of operational efficiency, costs, safety, capacity and environment.
