The project is ambitious: to bring the Serie A to the United States for a tournament during the World Cup in Qatar, scheduled from November 21 to December 18. There are two main reasons for this. First of all, it would be a way to tickle a strategic market, for our soccer, such as the United States. Secondly, to allow clubs to keep in activity the players who will not participate in the tournament.
Two days ago, the ad of the League, Luigi De Siervo, flew to New York, where on Sixth Avenue a new office was opened some time ago to understand the feasibility of the project with broadcasters and sponsors. It will not be easy to transfer the 20 A teams to the United States. The project is at an early stage. Who could broadcast the matches? In the US, the rights to our championship are held by CBS Sports.
It would not be easy to have 20 teams at the same time, with players, coaches, staff and various workers. The tournament could last about twenty days. The project could be structured with an initial group stage and then a scoreboard with quarters, semifinals and finals. The idea would be to play this tournament in a structure in the United States that could allow the 20 clubs to play and train, in fact in the same place, like the bubble in 2020 of the NBA.
Could the simultaneity of the World Cup be an issue? The only obligation for the National Leagues is to "release" players. Nothing prohibits them from organizing tournaments or playing championships as well. The Serie A clubs have given the OK for the realization of this enormous project. Two unknowns remain: the pandemic and the money. The hunt for sponsors has begun.
