Italy is famous for being the homeland of the Roman Empire. Italy is bursting with countless ancient Roman sites and one of the more overlooked sites is the ancient city of Aquileia. While Aquileia may be forgotten today, it was once one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire.
As the Roman Empire declined, Aquileia was sacked and destroyed by Attila the Hun, and eventually, the once-great city was left destroyed and passed into the pages of history. Italian sites like Aquileia are often overshadowed by other more famous places like the ash-covered city of Herculaneum and the ancient Roman capital of Rome and its many surviving monuments.
