The global geography of tourism continues its run. Indicators are very good for a sector that has been among the hardest hit by Covid, and although China still remains closed due to pandemic-related restrictions, tourist flow estimates for 2023 are promising.
Although 40 percent of Europeans say they are concerned about rising costs, 70 percent are already planning a trip for the holiday season, with spending budgets that are similar to last year. Specific to Italy, a 32 percent growth in international tourism is expected for summer 2023.
Sticking instead to the 2022 trend, Italy ranks fourth in the world for global tourism flows with revenues of 21.3 billion euros, up 22.7 percent on 2020. In November, Italy has the highest saturation rate of facilities booked through travel agencies among major European countries (37 percent), and the same month saw the highest increase in international airline bookings to the country, up 65 percent on 2021 to 392,000.
