The Fermo shoe making district is raising a new generation of artisans

The shoe industry around Fermo in the eastern Marche region of Italy has opened its doors to 31 people under 35 years of age. It is one of the biggest shoe manufacturing districts in the country, with more than 3,000 companies, including luxury group Tod's.


Interns accepted by the district's four vocational workshops come from all over Italy. The project involves 10 companies and aims to train up young professionals in roles that the district desperately needs to ensure methods and expertise are passed to the next generation. These include manufacturing production technicians, employees in the various phases of shoe production and window dressers.
