When the Normans rampaged through Rome in 1084, Santi Quattro Coronati was a huge church attached to an influence-wielding monastery – which may be why they all but destroyed it. The hotch-potch of buildings later tacked on to the miraculously preserved apse is a treasure trove of late medieval architecture and art.
