Visitors to Florence typically know the city divided between the historical center and the bohemian "other side of the river," Oltrarno. Go a bit deeper and you may find quarters such as San Niccolò before Piazzale Michelangelo, Santo Spirito in the Oltrarno, Sant'Ambrogio near Santa Croce promoted for having a local vibe and secret finds to match.
But one of Florence's most unsung quarters is Beccaria, located just minutes east of the heart of Florence's beating center. Beccaria is divided from the historical center by Porta alla Croce, a medieval "door," part of the original gate to the walls of Florence.
