600 Italian mayors joined the life senator and Holocaust survivor Liliana Segre at a rally against hatred in Milan on 10 December. Thousands of people showed up to support the 89-year-old Segre who survived Auschwitz concentration camp as a child and was recently placed under police protection following a barrage of anti-Semitic messages, including death threats.
"I have known hatred. I have known what it means to be a reject of the society to which I believed I belonged" - Segre said from a stage in Piazza della Scala - “I heard the words of hatred, hateful and insulting, and I saw with my eyes the realisation of a ferocious programme prepared from hatred.”
