You’ll Love These Unique Italian Regional Coffee Drinks

Italia has many fascinating regional coffee drinks and traditions. Let’s begin at the top of the boot and explore a few. In the Italian northwest Aosta Valley near France and Switzerland, one can enjoy a Caffè alla Valdostana.  This popular coffee drink includes sugar, lemon peel, cloves, cinnamon and juniper.  Traditionally drank from a wooden cup, or grolla, that often gets passed on amongst friends.

Meanwhile in Turin, the cherished Bicerin is their signature coffee drink, which evolved from 18th century BavareisaBicerin is a delicious combination of coffee, cream, and chocolate, which is poured in separated layers and served in a small glass. A quick stir before drinking and you’re in caffè heaven.

In the beautiful city of Padua, one can enjoy Caffè Padovano.  Originating from a 19th century tradition, this coffee was a popular drink amongst politicians and intellectuals.  In perfect harmony, it combines espresso, cream, milk, mint syrup, and a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

In the central west Marche region, the Moretta Fanese is a coffee originating in the city of Fano. This drink is made by heating sugar, lemon zest, and alcohol (usually made from anise, rum or brandy).  Espresso is carefully poured on top.  Strong and sweet, it is usually enjoyed after meals to help with digestion.  According to legend, the Moretta was created by sailors and fishermen who savored the warmth and caffeine jolt before they headed out to sea. 

In the region of Calabria, be sure to enjoy a licorice laced Caffè Calabrese, which involves first heating sugar and brandy.  Afterward, a licorice tablet is added, and finally hot espresso is poured in the glass.  A wonderful aromatic coffee is born.
