A City’s Simple Joy

If there was ever a perfect warm-weather, holiday-weekend city sport, bocce may be it. It requires only a set of bocce balls, which are traditionally made of metal but come in a plastic version these days, and a flat, rectangular space to use as the court.

The rules are complicated enough to keep the game interesting, but the skill is simple enough to require no athletic ability. As a bonus, it is a traditional Italian game, commonly played with one hand while the other holds an espresso or a glass of wine.
