The latest annual survey released by ASILS (Associazione Scuole d'Italiano Lingua Seconda) and conducted by Format Research confirms that the United States represents the single most important international market for extended language study in the Bel Paese.
According to the certified findings from ASILS-accredited schools, the United States ranks first worldwide in total student-weeks, accounting for 13,432 weeks of instruction. American learners do not simply drop in for brief visits; they record an average stay of 3.7 weeks per student. This sustained presence places the US at the very top of Italy’s educational travel sector, generating direct cultural and economic value across Italian host cities.
The demographic distribution reported by the association highlights two core profiles driving American demand. Learners over 50 years of age constitute the single largest demographic at 31.6 percent, reflecting a powerful trend toward heritage discovery, personal enrichment, and roots travel. For this segment, studying Italian in Italy often represents a profound bridge back to ancestral origins and regional traditions.
Simultaneously, young adults aged 18 to 25 represent the second-largest demographic bracket at 23.1 percent. This cohort reflects active bilateral partnerships between American universities and Italian institutions, as college students travel across the Atlantic for credit-bearing study abroad programs, language immersion, and cultural internships.
