Aspen city councilman pushes for renaming of Columbus Day

By: Rick Carroll

City Councilman Bert Myrin wants Aspen to treat Columbus Day similar to what cities such as Denver, San Francisco and just recently, Los Angeles, have already done: Change it to Indigenous Peoples Day. For now, however, Myrin has not gained enough traction for the change to take effect by the time Columbus Day rolls around Oct. 9.

The first-term councilman has floated the idea at two recent City Council meetings, and he also has taken to Facebook to gauge public opinion. Last year, Myrin's proposal didn't get much traction, so he has intensified his efforts to persuade city staff members and elected officials this time around.
