Calitaranta brings the music of Puglia to Stanford and San Francisco in May 2026

CaliTaranta will bring the sounds and traditions of southern Italy to California on May 21–22, 2026, with events scheduled between San Francisco and Stanford University. The festival is designed to introduce American audiences to pizzica and taranta music, musical traditions that originated in Puglia, especially in the Salento area in the southern part of the region.

Inspired by the famous La Notte della Taranta festival in Melpignano, Puglia, CaliTaranta combines concerts, dance, workshops, and cultural exchanges focused on Italian folk heritage. Organizers aim to create a bridge between Italy and the United States through music, bringing Apulian traditions to one of America’s most internationally connected academic and cultural environments.

Puglia’s influence remains at the center of the project. The rhythms of the tamburello, the fast-paced movements of pizzica dancing, and the Mediterranean atmosphere of Salento are presented not simply as entertainment, but as part of a wider expression of italianità. The festival highlights how regional Italian traditions continue to evolve while reaching new audiences abroad.

The California setting also reflects the growing interest in Italian culture across the United States, particularly among younger generations and multicultural communities. By hosting part of the festival near Stanford and the Bay Area, CaliTaranta places the music of Puglia in a global environment known for innovation, education, and international exchange.

The May 2026 program is expected to include performances, educational activities, and collaborations between Italian and American artists celebrating the cultural heritage of southern Italy.
