Carpani's Italian Seafood Grille started as a sort of culinary therapy for owner Mario Tartaglia. He had sold his three other local restaurants to care for his wife, Lena, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She died in 2004, and three years went by before Mario realized it was time to move on, which is when he opened Carpani's on Pattonwood Drive in Irondequoit.
"I went through hell," Tartaglia said. "I thought, either I'd kill myself or keep myself busy."
