Columbus Day celebrated with annual Parade, Italian festival and Tournament of Bands

By: Maggie Gilroy

A red, white and green wreath hung off the statue of Christopher Columbus in downtown Binghamton on Monday morning. Every year, members of the Sons of Italy Lodge #487 and Duca Degli Abruzzi Lodge #443 place the wreath on the statue to commemorate not only Columbus, but Italian contributions to the local community.

"In the name of all the great things that Christopher Columbus did in finding the Americas and leading the way for all Italians and all of the heritage of every nationality that came to America, we commit this wreath that's hanging here at the statue," said Sons of Italy Lodge #487 President Mark Dozoretz, before hanging the wreath on the statue Monday morning.
