For decades, Scotch Plains and the village of Montazzoli, Italy, have been sister cities as hundreds of immigrants left the Abruzzo region of Italy in search of a better life. They discovered Scotch Plains and built a strong community on the north side of town. On Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Township's Columbus Day celebration, Mayor Kevin Glover announced the creation of Montazzoli Plaza, which will be located in front of the Italian American Club on Valley Ave.
"Montazzoli has long had a Piazza Scotch Plains, so our proclamation of Montazzoli Plaza here in Scotch Plains is long overdue," said Mayor Glover. The celebration included Italian music, and a wreath-laying ceremony in front of the Christopher Columbus monument outside the Scotch Plains Municipal Building on Park Ave. Giovanni Young-Annunziato, a 7th grader at St. Bart's Academy, read his winning essay from the 2015 Columbus Day essay contest.
