Throughout October, Italian-American heritage is honored and celebrated throughout New Jersey. This went into effect in 2009 when then-Gov. Jon Corzine signed the bill in Nutley declaring it so, outside of town hall before the annual Columbus Day Parade.
Besides the parade, various activities are held throughout Nutley and Belleville as well as towns such as Elizabeth. Essex County also recognizes Italian-Americans who commit to improving residents' lives and their leadership. States including New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts and Illinois also recognize the month.
