Exploring the ‘Other’ Tuscany: Escape the Crowds of Florence to Hit up the Quiet Beaches of Monte Argentario

Who knew you could travel Tuscany without the crowds but with the sea?  While Tuscany is often associated with inland vineyards and farmland, the region has an extensive coastline. In other words, take everything you love about Tuscany and add amazing seafood and beaches. And all of this can be found about 100 miles from Florence and about a two-hour drive from the Rome airport.

The crown jewel of the area is Monte Argentario, a peninsula more akin to an island, as it’s connected to the mainland only by a trio of narrow spits of land and causeways. Monte Argentario has a distinctly rustic feel, with only the villages of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole and a smattering of tiny hamlets competing for space with wooded mountains and pristine rocky beaches.
