Visiting Rome in summer is among my favourite travel experiences, despite needing to weave through hordes of tourists. Across seven trips to the Italian capital, I could barely move for tourists at world-famous landmarks like the Pantheon, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Spanish Steps.
But I’ve found the key to enjoying Rome in its peak season is to veer off this intensely crowded tourist trail. I’ve only needed to walk a few minutes away from busy sites to discover comparatively peaceful and authentic neighbourhoods, and overlooked attractions.
