Italian American Mets legend Lee Mazzilli honored in Queens with Hall of Fame induction

Lee Mazzilli’s lifelong connection to New York baseball reached another milestone when the former All-Star outfielder was officially inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame at Citi Field in Queens. For generations of Mets fans, Mazzilli remains one of the most recognizable faces of the franchise, a hometown star whose career became deeply intertwined with the history of the team.

Born in Brooklyn in 1955, Mazzilli was selected by the Mets with the 14th overall pick in the 1973 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his Major League debut in 1976 and quickly became one of the club’s brightest talents during a difficult period for the franchise.

Between 1977 and 1980, he hit .277 with 53 home runs, 262 RBIs, and 117 stolen bases while earning a National League All-Star selection in 1979. That same year, he became the first Mets player ever to hit a home run in an MLB All-Star Game.

Mazzilli’s story is also a classic Italian American success story. The son of Libero Mazzilli, whose family roots were Italian, he grew up in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood where family, community, and sports played a central role in everyday life. Throughout his career, he often spoke about the values he learned growing up in an Italian American household and the pride he felt representing New York on baseball’s biggest stages.

After playing 14 Major League seasons, Mazzilli continued his baseball career as a coach, manager, broadcaster, and mentor. He later won two World Series titles as a coach with the New York Yankees and managed the Baltimore Orioles.

The Hall of Fame recognition celebrates not only Mazzilli’s achievements on the field, but also his enduring place in New York sports culture. Nearly 50 years after his Mets debut, the Brooklyn-born Italian American remains one of the most beloved figures in franchise history and a symbol of the deep connection between baseball, New York, and the Italian American community.
