On the occasion of International Coffee Day, it is worth looking at how Italians continue to celebrate one of their most beloved rituals – and how habits are gradually evolving. In Italy the coffee ritual remains central – but habits are changing. Recent surveys show that 97% of Italians drink coffee, 89.3% consume it at least once a week, and 73.9% do so daily.
The country ranks 7th in the world by volume of consumption, with about 95 million cups served per day – an average of 1.6 cups per person. Domestic consumption dominates: roughly 82% of all coffee is consumed at home rather than in cafés or bars. Among preparation methods, 58% of consumers prefer ground coffee (espresso, moka, etc.), followed by 36% using capsules, 21% using pods, and 9% using whole beans.
