Italian community in Pueblo plans Columbus Day festivities

The bust of Christopher Columbus that has presided over Pueblo's Mesa Junction since 1905 is a familiar local landmark. The bust and the pillar on which it is mounted are more than just a monument to the famous explorer credited with discovering America. It is a point of pride for Pueblo's Italian community.

Italian immigrants flocked to Pueblo in the late 19th century looking for work and hoping to carve out a better life. Some failed. But many others succeeded in creating a new prosperity for themselves and, more importantly, for their children and grandchildren.
