Introduced from Britain to Genova just after the Italian reunification, rugby has grown in Italy and now counts over 1,000 rugby clubs within the territory. These clubs represent over 70,000 registered male players, as well as over 8,000 registered female players. The sport is most popular in the north of Italy, with many teams coming from the Veneto and Lombardy.
