Newcleo, an Italian startup in the advanced nuclear sector, is accelerating its push into the United States, positioning itself as one of the most ambitious European players in next-generation energy. Founded in 2021, the company focuses on small modular reactors (SMRs) powered by recycled nuclear waste, with a technology designed to improve safety and reduce long-term environmental impact.
In March 2026, Newcleo formally began discussions with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to obtain approval for its first reactor and a fuel fabrication facility in the United States. This step marks the start of a complex licensing process that could lead to the construction of advanced nuclear infrastructure on American soil.
The U.S. has become a strategic priority for the Italian startup due to faster regulatory timelines and stronger financial incentives compared to Europe. In some cases, nuclear approvals in the U.S. can move 2–3 times faster, making the market more attractive for innovative technologies. Newcleo is also exploring partnerships with American companies, including an agreement with Oklo to develop up to $2 billion in nuclear fuel recycling infrastructure.
Financial backing reflects this growth strategy. The company has raised over €645 million since its launch, including €75 million in early 2026 alone, with total funding exceeding €100 million in the past year. These resources are being directed toward expansion, research, and industrial development, particularly in North America.
Newcleo’s long-term vision includes building multiple reactors internationally, with potential plans to deploy a significant share of its future projects in the U.S. market. Each reactor could require investments of around €800 million, highlighting the scale of its ambitions.
The company represents a new wave of Italian innovation – combining advanced engineering, circular fuel technology, and international partnerships – while leveraging U.S. policy support to accelerate commercialization and global expansion.
